Few people know about and obscure setting in IE6 that may prevent them from accessing a password protected FTP sites when using the IE browser. I believe it references the settings for Active FTP vs. Passive FTP. See below.
This problem includes access from the internet to external USB drives attached to a router.
According to newsgroups many people are buying external USB hard drives along with a router that has built in USB port support to allow selected people access to files. They may have one or more partitions with just read permissions and one with both read/write access. It is a great way to give people, friends and relatives 24 hr. access to all types of files, music or pictures. It also works well with dialup except for very large files.
You may have received a error saying you do not have permission to access and it timed out.
Solution: "In Internet Explorer go to Tools | Internet Options | Advanced (tab) and uncheck the 'Use Passive Ftp' box. It is usually checked.
It is toward the bottom of the 'Browsing' section.
Then close all instances of Internet Explorer for the changes to take effect. Problem solved."
